Riding, getting off of and driving a bus are activities that tend to follow a relatively repetitive course of action.  This is the case such that those who do this every day could tend to assume things have happened when in fact they have not.  While it’s too early to know what caused a horrifying Lauderhill pedestrian accident, what is known is that a woman was dragged for 400 feet before the bus she had just left finally stopped.

According to the authorities, this Lauderhill pedestrian accident occurred on the 5800 block of Northwest 28th Street in Lauderhill at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.  The 61-year-old woman had just gotten off the private bus that provides transportation for seniors and was walking in front of it to cross the street.  She stopped to tie her shoe and was hit by the bus, and she was dragged for 400 feet before a witness alerted the driver to the situation.  The woman was seriously injured and remained hospitalized.

When Florida bicycle accidents occur, the vast majority of them lead to at least one injury, and that’s for the obvious reason that those who are traveling on two wheels are directly exposed to the elements around them.  Even if a bicyclist is wearing a helmet, his or her body can be severely harmed by the concrete and the heavy metal that’s nearby whenever a crash occurs.  Tragically, a man was killed by a vehicle in a Coral Springs bicycle accident over the weekend, and police are continuing to investigate the situation.

According to the authorities, this fatal Coral Springs bicycle accident occurred on Saturday at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Sample Road and Turtle Creek Drive.  A 40-year-old man was riding his bicycle across the intersection when he was hit by the 28-year-old driver of an Infiniti sedan.  The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and succumbed to them the following day.

Band Camp Instructor Takes a Plea in Florida Sexual Abuse Case

Wed, May 11, 2011

Posted in: Fort Lauderdale Attorneys, Sexual Abuse Attorney

One of the rites of passage for many children in American culture is to go off to some sort of camp in the summer.  These experiences help a child develop independence and other skills that will be needed later in life.  Unfortunately, that’s not always what occurs.  There are situations involving Florida sexual abuse that arise, and that appears to be what occurred with an instructor at a band camp who has pleaded no contest to three counts of child abuse.

According to court records, this Florida sexual abuse case centered on a girl who was between the ages of 12 and 15 when the acts occurred.  According to the defendant’s defense attorney, the sexual contact was consensual between the girl and the band instructor, who is now 23 years old.  The judge approved the plea to lesser charges because of the consensual nature of the relationship, but Florida law also states that minors do not have the capacity to provide binding consent until they reach the age of majority.

Florida Sexual Abuse Statistics

First and foremost, we’d like to express our support for the girl and her family now that this matter is closed at least in the criminal courts.  We hope that she has obtained the help she may need in the wake of this Florida sexual abuse issue.  In addition, this case will now become part of the overall statistics regarding Florida sexual abuse.  Every year, more than 11,000 such reports are made to police, even though many of these situations are never reported by the victims.

Even though the criminal prosecution is over, that does not mean that the family of the girl could not still file a Florida personal injury lawsuit against the band instructor and perhaps the band camp depending on certain circumstances.  If such a case was filed and was successful, the family could recover damages that compensate them for their losses and for their needs for psychiatric help both now and in the future.

If your child has been harmed in this manner, you need to seek the help of Florida sexual abuse lawyers who can help you report the matter to police and fight for your rights.  Contact Bernstein & Maryanoff today to schedule a free initial consultation.
