South Florida Plane Crash Kills Two People

Flying a private airplane is a luxury for most, a convenience for some and a thrill for almost anyone.  Getting around by air provides the ultimate in speed and convenience, but it also presents a high degree of risk.  Tragically, a Fort Lauderdale resident was one of two people killed in a Florida plane crash that occurred over the weekend off the coast of Fort Pierce.

According to reports, the two men were flying a small private plane that was being piloted by Fort Lauderdale resident Donald T. Hopkin, who was 60 years old.  He was flying with North Palm Beach resident James B. Doom, who was 39 at the time of the Florida plane crash.  The plane went down quickly, and at this point no one seems to understand what could have caused the crash.  Weather was not believed to be a factor.

First and foremost, we’d like to offer our most sincere condolences to the families of the men who were suddenly lost without warning of any kind.  Tragic, unforeseen and sudden losses like these are very difficult for those who are left behind to ever understand, and our hope is that the families are able to somehow rally around each other and get past this deep sense of grief someday.

Potential Defendants to a Florida Wrongful Death Lawsuit

At this point, it’s difficult to know just which parties could be at fault for these two deaths, and much will depend on the results of the investigation that will hopefully identify a cause of the crash.  If it turns out that it was pilot error, the pilot’s estate could be liable for damages for the wrongful death of the passenger.

However, if something was wrong with the plane in terms of a defect, the manufacturer of the plane could be named as a defendant in a Florida wrongful death lawsuit.  Pilots have no way of knowing when most defects are present until it’s too late to make the necessary corrections, and even the smallest part of any plane can instantly create disaster if something goes wrong.
