One-Car Accident in Sunrise Kills High School Student

Drivers are responsible for many things when they get behind the wheel.  They are bound by law to not create unnecessary risks and danger for other drivers or pedestrians around them.  They are also responsible for the safety of their passengers.  Tragically, a 16-year-old boy lost his life as a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a one-car accident over the weekend, and the others in the vehicle were injured.

According to the Sun-Sentinel:

“A 16-year-old Piper High School student died in a car accident over the weekend in Sunrise, police said Monday.

The student, Brandon Leaty, was killed in a single-car crash at 12:55 a.m. Saturday along Oakland Park Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

Police said Leaty was in the passenger seat when the driver of the blue Honda, Kevin Tavares, 17, lost control of the car as he was negotiating a curb, slamming into a pole.

Both Tavares and a passenger sitting in the back seat, Anthony Fernandez, 18, sustained injuries that were not life threatening, said Police Lt. Brian Gerity.

Authorities said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the crash, though they are awaiting toxicology reports. The accident remains under investigation. It was not immediately known where the boys were coming from when the crash occurred.”
