When we learn to drive, we are taught to do so in a defensive manner that not only minimizes the risks created for other drivers on the road, but also so we can be ready to handle mistakes made by those navigating other vehicles.  However, there are certain mistakes so egregious that even the ultimate defensive tactics cannot avoid the resulting fallout.  Unfortunately, a Fort Lauderdale man was injured near Orlando yesterday when he was hit by a vehicle driving the wrong way down the highway.

According to the Sun-Sentinel:

“A 20-year-old Fort Lauderdale man was in fair condition Sunday after he was injured in a wrong-way wreck on Interstate 95 in Central Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Michael A. Lima was northbound on I-95 at 1:05 a.m. Saturday when his 2001 Ford pickup truck was struck by another pickup. For at least 11 miles, the second pickup had been traveling south on the wrong side of the road, the Highway Patrol said.

The second driver was identified by the Highway Patrol as Harry C. Brown, 62, of Astor.

Lima swerved toward the center median but could not avoid colliding with Brown’s 2007 Ford. Lima’s vehicle overturned and caught fire in the median, resting on its roof. Brown’s vehicle spun out and came to rest in the outside, northbound lane of I-95.”
