Driver Charged with DUI Manslaughter after Crash in May

There are times when the wheels of justice seem to turn slowly.  Even when that’s the case, it does not mean that efforts to bring someone who has caused harm to justice are not continuing to progress.  Evidence of this process was provided to the public today when a man who caused a fatal accident in May was arrested for DUI manslaughter.  The defendant also faces other charges.

According to the Sun-Sentinel:

“A driver involved in a fatal crash last May in front of the Swap Shop has been arrested on DUI manslaughter charges, police said Thursday.

Maurice Williams, 25, of Fort Lauderdale, had been driving with a suspended license when he fatally struck Philip Wilson, 80, of Fort Lauderdale, police said.

Williams was arrested Tuesday.

The crash happened in the 3200 block of West Sunrise Boulevard at about 3:15 a.m. on May 16.

Wilson was under his van, stopped in the outer lane of the roadway. When Williams, driving a 2007 Ford Focus, struck the van from behind, the van moved forward and ran over Wilson, police said.

Authorities said Wilson, who was a vendor at the Swap Shop, was killed instantly.”

The defendant appears to have a history of traffic violations, and these problems were included in the charges filed against him.  If you or someone you love has been harmed in an accident, you do not necessarily need to wait for authorities to make an arrest.  You can seek redress in civil court by contacting Fort Lauderdale accident lawyers who have years of experience in successfully fighting for the rights of injured clients.  Contact Bernstein & Maryanoff today to schedule a free initial consultation.
