Bicyclists who share the road with every other type of vehicle tend to understand the risks involved with trusting that others will obey traffic laws. If anyone makes even the slightest mistake for whatever reason, those on bicycles are extremely vulnerable to the damage that can be done by vehicles that outweigh bicyclists by thousands of pounds. Unfortunately, a Lauderhill woman paid the price for this risk Monday evening when she was injured by a hit-and-run driver.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“Police are seeking the public’s help to find a hit-and-run driver who seriously hurt a 71-year-old bicyclist.
The driver fled the scene after striking Robert Kravitz sometime before 7:30 p.m. Monday in the northbound lanes of the 4800 block of North University Drive, Police Capt. Rick Rocco said.
“It is reasonable that the person who struck Mr. Kravitz was aware of the crash by the shear impact of the crash and the clearly lit area,” Rocco said in a news release.
Kravitz, whose last known home was in Sunrise, was riding near the curb of the road when he was hit and thrown onto a swale, police said.
Police don’t know how long Kravitz was on the ground before a passer-by found him and called authorities. Police do not have a description of the car that hit Kravitz.”
The report goes on to state that the bicyclist was listed in critical condition. While many would hesitate to assert their legal rights in hit-and-run cases, that is not an advisable approach.
