Car accidents occur for any number of reasons, and there are rare circumstances in which a driver who causes an accident is not found to be at fault for the damages that result. However, being involved in a police chase is not one of them, and despite the fact that a driver in Fort Lauderdale this morning was evading police and was ultimately involved in two crashes, he could still face civil liability in addition to the obvious criminal prosecution he now appears to have initiated on himself.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“Police are investigating a crash that witnesses say happened during a police chase Friday morning along the beach.
Several tourists who were sunbathing on Fort Lauderdale beach said they noticed police cars following a vehicle that later crashed into another car on State Road A1A just north of Sunrise Boulevard.
The vehicles involved are a gray Hyundai and a red Toyota.
Police said one of the drivers had just fled the scene of another accident he was involved in.
Paramedics treated at least one person, whose condition was not immediately available.”
The amount of damages for which the defendant could ultimately be found liable would depend somewhat on the severity of the injuries suffered by the person who was hurt.
