Van Kills Dirt Bike Rider on Sidewalk

Dirt bikes are extremely popular recreational vehicles, but anyone who has experience with this sort of activity understands that they should expect to deal with danger and risks while riding through trails.  However, when someone is on a sidewalk, those dangers are generally not foreseen.  Tragically, one man on a sidewalk was hit and killed by a van that ran off the road yesterday.

According to the Sun-Sentinel:

“A man riding a dirt bike on a sidewalk died after a van veered off a street and struck him Monday night, the Broward Sheriff’s Office reported.

Errol Beckford, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, was pronounced dead at Broward General Medical Center soon after the 9:30 p.m. crash.

Authorities said Willie Sharp, 62, also of Fort Lauderdale, was driving a 1999 Dodge van south on Northwest 27th Avenue and tried to turn left onto Northwest Sixth Street. Sharp turned too wide and the van went onto the sidewalk, striking Beckford, the Sheriff’s Office reported.”

Authorities have stated that charges could be forthcoming against the driver of the van pending the completion of their investigation.  In furtherance of this investigation, police are also asking any witnesses to the incident to contact them to provide a statement.

Regardless of the particulars of this situation, there are several different issues that could arise if a legal claim is filed.  While it’s not generally acceptable to ride a dirt bike on a sidewalk, it does not necessarily mean that the person killed should not have legal rights as a result of being hit.  If you or someone you love has been harmed, you need the help of Fort Lauderdale accident lawyers who can help clients deal with the aftermath of such a tragedy and hold those responsible accountable.  Contact Bernstein & Maryanoff today to schedule a free initial consultation.
