All of us who have any experience driving have crossed our share of train tracks in our time, and most of us understand that it’s never a good idea to stop on these rails even when there is no train in sight. However, there are instances in which circumstances seem to come together that leave a vehicle stuck in that spot. Tragically, that could prove to be the case with an accident that occurred in Fort Lauderdale this morning that killed two people.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“A Tri-Rail commuter train struck a car Thursday morning. Two people who were in the car are dead, and another has been rushed to the hospital.
The accident happened about 8:44 a.m. on the tracks crossing Commercial Boulevard, just west of Interstate 95.
A smashed gold sedan is upside down on the tracks. Two bodies covered with yellow tarp are next to the vehicle.
A man driving his fiancee to work said the car’s driver had stopped on the tracks when the railroad crossing arms came down in front of and behind the car.
The driver was unable to back up, then tried to cross the tracks again to beat the northbound train when it was struck, said Brandon Williams, 22, of Lauderdale Lakes.
He said he was two cars behind the vehicle that was struck. Both were headed eastbound on Commercial Boulevard.”
Given the facts available as of now, there’s no way of assigning fault. Investigators will work to determine that factor in the coming days. In the meantime, this tragic loss of life should remind anyone who’s suffered as a result of such an incident to contact Fort Lauderdale accident lawyers who have decades of experience in sifting through complicated piles of evidence and successfully fighting for the rights of those wronged.
