Pedestrians have been sharing the roads and crosswalks with vehicles for decades, and while the majority of these situations do not lead to problems, the simple fact of the matter is that there is danger with this arrangement that can sometimes lead to tragedy. Unfortunately, that is what occurred Wednesday as a teenage girl was hit by a vehicle on her way to her volunteer job at a retirement center.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“Just 15, the Coral Glades High School sophomore was on her way to that retirement center Wednesday when she was struck while crossing Sample Road at Coral Ridge Drive to reach the bus stop. Suffering from massive injuries, Lucas died Saturday evening after doctors disconnected her life support at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
The driver, a Davie resident, stopped at the scene, and no charges were filed, said Coral Springs Sgt. Joe McHugh.
The driver’s name was not available from police on Sunday.”
The victim is the fourth area teenager to die in traffic incidents in the past two weeks. This is obviously a disturbing trend. While it’s a small positive that the driver of the vehicle from Wednesday stopped and will not be charged with a crime, it should not discount the possibility that he or she could and perhaps should face the prospect of civil liability for negligence, depending on the factors that led to the crash.
