Every parent fears the worst for his or her child, and the overriding instinct for every parent is to keep their children safe from harm. When an infant is sleeping at home just before 4 a.m., most would think that the child was safe and not in need of overt protection. Unfortunately, one child experienced the utmost danger while sleeping at home this morning as a result of a car crashing into the building in which he lives.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“A car plowed into a North Lauderdale apartment this morning, slightly injuring a baby sleeping in a crib, the Broward Sheriff’s Office and neighbors say.
The crash happened about 3:48 a.m. at Park Plaza Apartments, on the northwest corner of Bailey Road and Southwest 81st Avenue.
A boy, who is thought to be about 8 months old, was hit by some debris when the red Chevrolet Cobalt crashed into the bedroom wall of the corner apartment, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The driver, whose name was not released, was heading west on Bailey Road when she lost control of the car and drove through the intersection of Southwest 81st Avenue, authorities said.
The vehicle careened onto the sidewalk, mowed down a fence, traveled across about 10 feet of grass and struck the apartment wall.
The crash damaged and knocked down the boy’s crib inside the apartment.
Simone Stewart, 30, who lives next door, said the crash woke her up. She walked outside her apartment and saw a red vehicle and the damaged wall.
She approached the driver, a woman in her early 20s, and said she smelled alcohol on her breath.”
