When a vehicle becomes disabled, many people will simply take the steps necessary to get it off of the road before a tow truck arrives in an attempt to clear it from the danger presented by oncoming traffic. However, doing so can expose those who are moving the vehicle to the same sorts of dangers, and one person was unfortunately on the wrong end of a terrible mistake on Saturday morning, as he was hit by an SUV while attempting to move a truck off the road. The accident has been classified as a hit-and-run.
According to WSVN Channel 7:
“Rafael Maldonado, 30, is fighting to stay alive after being hit by a sport utility vehicle. According to Florida Highway Patrol, a white 2006 Dodge Durango hit the 30-year-old Saturday morning, while he was assisting one of his business trucks which had broken down on Interstate 595 westbound near University Drive.
Alex said the SUV clipped Rafael on the side and he broke his pelvis and will have to undergo surgery.
Authorities said the Durango kept heading west and got off at Pine Island Road. Police are still searching for the suspect.”
The article goes on to ask for help from the public in locating the driver of the SUV, and if/when he or she is caught, serious criminal charges will likely arise. In addition, the driver could face significant exposure to civil liability. If you or someone you love has been injured in a hit-and-run crash, you should not simply assume that nothing can be done because the driver has not yet been located.
