We posted yesterday regarding a train that killed a pedestrian, and while police are still looking for the cause of the accident, an old report published last year was republished today that detailed the growing concern regarding the rising number of train accidents in South Florida. It seems that this trend is continuing, with accidents that led to deaths occurring several times in recent weeks.
According to the Sun-Sentinel in a story from August of 2008:
“More people have been struck and killed by trains in South Florida this year than any time in the past two decades, raising alarms among railroad and state transportation officials.
So far this year, trains have killed 15 people on the CSX tracks in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties that carry Tri-Rail, Amtrak and freight trains. That’s more than twice as many deaths along the rail corridor than occur in a year. Since January, Tri-Rail trains have killed 13 people. Amtrak trains have killed two.
The increase in train track deaths occurred as more trains travel the corridor. Last year, Tri-Rail began running trains every 20 minutes at rush hour after constructing a second track. That boosted the number of trains from 30 to 50 a day in the past two years, said Allen Yoder, the authority’s safety security administrator.”
The bottom line is that while becoming less dependent on cars as a whole is mostly a positive development, there are negatives as more people demand train availability and more runs are added.
