Former professional baseball player Jim Leyritz used to make headlines for glorious reasons, including his memorable performances in the World Series for teams such as the New York Yankees. However, Leyritz has been garnering attention for all of the wrong reasons lately, and it was reported last week that he would be forced to remain in jail after allegedly violating his bail conditions stemming from a DUI manslaughter charge.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“Leyritz was arrested last week after his ex-wife accused him of beating her.
He had already been charged with DUI manslaughter and was free on bail. A judge ruled that Leyritz’s latest arrest violated the conditions of his release and sent him to jail.
Tuesday’s hearing before Circuit Judge Marc Gold was on a previously scheduled motion by Leyritz, who wants to get his vehicle back.
It has been impounded since the 2007 fatal crash that led to Leyritz’s manslaughter charge. The state typically holds the vehicle as evidence until the trial concludes.
Leyritz’s attorney, David Bogenschutz, wants to ask Gold to also consider restoring the former ballplayer’s bond and letting him out of jail.
The lawyer said he needed 1 1/2 hours of the judge’s time to put the two Davie police officers on the stand who responded to the domestic disturbance call that led to Leyritz’s arrest last week.
Gold scheduled a hearing Thursday at 10 a.m. to consider the matter.
In the meantime, Leyritz will remain behind bars.”
Leyritz’ DUI manslaughter trial is set to begin in September. This entire situation should remind everyone that anyone can kill with a vehicle and a series of bad decisions.
